Eliminating Pay as a Reason for IT (or Other) Staff to Leave

In conjunction with Computer World's 2008 100 Best Places to Work in IT study, columnist Frank Hayes shares his thoughts on the top reasons that IT staff would want to leave and his recommendations on what to do about them.  Pay - particularly low pay - tops his list:

There may not be a lot you can do about salaries and raises; they're probably watched like a hawk by your chief financial officer. But you have options. Example: Stop using your bonus pool as a way of supplementing salaries across the board. Instead, pay much bigger bonuses to fewer people for specific, publicly recognized accomplishments. Suddenly, a bonus means something. Everybody on your staff won't hit the jackpot, but everyone will have a chance – based on what he accomplishes.

Good advice methinks.  And not just for your IT staff.

oooh, i agree. when bonuses become entitlements and it's just a question of "how much will it be"... yikes. time to revisit the program.
